A custom-built, three-axis CNC router purpose-designed for milling and cutting carbon fiber and glass fiber composites, with secondary capability across hardwoods, plastics, and aluminum. Rigid aluminum-extrusion bed, ball-screw drive on all axes, and a dual-drive gantry that resists racking across the 900 mm span.

Frame & Motion
Aluminum-extrusion T-slot bed as work surface and structural base. All three axes driven by SFU1605 ball screws (16 mm diameter, 5 mm pitch) giving 5 mm linear travel per screw revolution. Y-axis uses dual-drive with two NEMA 23 steppers to keep the gantry square and prevent racking across the 900 mm span.
Spindle & Toolholding
1.5 kW air-cooled spindle with stainless steel body carries tooling via ER11 collet system for high-precision tool shanks. Four ceramic bearings support the shaft with grease lubrication. Runout under 0.01 mm, tapered-bore error under 0.005 mm.
Control Chain
Spindle speed set by 2 HP VFD (200โ240 VAC single-phase input, 0โ400 Hz output) commanded via PWM from the controller. Motion handled by 4-axis USB linkage motion control card rated to 100 kHz pulse output, running on Windows 7/8/10 with optocoupler isolation.

Runtime & Duty Cycle
Carbon fiber: limit continuous cutting to 4โ6 hours. Wood: up to 8 hours continuous. Allow 30 minutes rest between long sessions before resuming.
Spindle & Speeds
Keep commanded speed within 10โ24,000 RPM range; VFD output tops out at 400 Hz. Use ER11-compatible tool shanks only; verify collet is seated and torqued before running.
General Safety
Carbon and glass fiber dust is abrasive and a respiratory/skin hazard โ use dust extraction and appropriate PPE. VFD enclosure rated IP20 โ keep clear of conductive composite dust. Confirm gantry moves freely and dual Y-drives are synchronized before homing.
